Hardwood vs Vinyl Plank Flooring — Which is Best for Edmonton Homes?

Hardwood vs Vinyl Plank Flooring in Edmonton
This is the question we get asked more than any other at our Edmonton showroom: should I go with real hardwood or vinyl plank? Both look beautiful, both are popular — but for Edmonton homeowners specifically, there are some important differences that make one significantly better suited to our climate.
Edmonton's Climate Changes Everything
Edmonton experiences extreme temperature swings — from -30°C in winter to +30°C in summer — combined with very low indoor humidity in winter when furnaces run constantly. This matters enormously for flooring because wood is a natural material that expands and contracts with humidity changes.
Solid hardwood can move up to 1mm per foot of width with humidity changes. In an Edmonton home running forced air heating all winter, that movement can cause gaps, cupping, and cracking if the floor isn't properly acclimatized and maintained at the right humidity level (35–55% relative humidity).
Vinyl plank, by contrast, is completely unaffected by humidity. It won't expand, contract, warp, or gap regardless of your home's humidity level. For Edmonton basements especially, vinyl plank is almost always the right choice.
Hardwood Flooring Pros & Cons for Edmonton
Pros: Real hardwood adds genuine value to your home. It can be sanded and refinished multiple times, giving it a lifespan of 50+ years. The look and feel of real wood is unmatched. It's ideal for above-grade living areas where humidity can be controlled.
Cons: More expensive than vinyl. Requires humidity control in Edmonton's dry winters. Cannot be installed in basements or high-moisture areas. Scratches more easily than quality vinyl plank.
Vinyl Plank (LVP) Pros & Cons for Edmonton
Pros: 100% waterproof — can go anywhere in the home including basements. Handles Edmonton's humidity fluctuations perfectly. Highly scratch and dent resistant. Significantly less expensive than hardwood. Looks remarkably like real wood in modern products.
Cons: Cannot be refinished — if it's damaged, planks must be replaced. Doesn't add the same resale value as real hardwood. Lower-end products can look artificial.
Our Recommendation for Edmonton Homeowners
For main floor living areas and bedrooms above grade where you want maximum warmth and long-term value — real hardwood, particularly engineered hardwood, is an excellent investment.
For basements, kitchens, bathrooms, and any area with moisture concerns — quality vinyl plank is the right choice every time. We see far too many Edmonton homeowners install hardwood in their basements only to have it warp within a year.
